Timberlake and Chasez were on The Mickey Mouse Club simultaneously in their pre-*NSYNC days, and they kept working together when *NSYNC was formed. And just as Tiger Beat (the bible of bubblegum) was obsessed with the New Kids in the late '80s, it would become equally obsessed with *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys in the '90s.br /br /Like Spears (who Timberlake became romantically involved with), Aguilera, and *NSYNC's JC Chasez, Timberlake got his start on the Disney Channel's '90s version of The Mickey Mouse Club. New Kids, in fact, were the male group that paved the way for *NSYNC as well as the Backstreet Boys and Take That (who were meant to be a British equivalent of New Kids). But Timberlake is part of the more modern school of teen pop, which is mindful of dance-pop, urban contemporary, and hip-hop and got started with the rise of New Kids on the Block, Debbie Gibson, and Tiffany in the late '80s. In the '70s, for example, artists like Donny Osmond, the Partridge Family, David Ca**idy, and the DeFranco Family were aimed at teens - those were the bubblegum popsters one typically read about in Tiger Beat magazine back then. Over the years, the teen market has had a lot of different sounds. Regardless, he is adored by millions of fans, many of whom have been adolescent girls.
Like similar teen pop favorites - who have included the Backstreet Boys, C-Note, Christina Aguilera, Hanson, the Spice Girls, and Britney Spears - Timberlake usually doesn't get much respect from rock critics (who, in many cases, tend to be very alternative-minded and anti-commercialistic). But someday, I’ll sit down in a big armchair that's conveniently positioned next to a crackling fire, pull him onto my lap, and say, “ Let me tell you about the ‘90s.” In the meantime, I have these special songs to help me through.As both a member of *NSYNC and a solo artist, Southern superstar Justin Timberlake has played a major role in the teen pop explosion of the '90s and 2000s. For the time being, he (my son, not my dad) is mostly into Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and various Nickelodeon shows that involve dancing animals. My son is too young to appreciate the pop music of yore, but that doesn’t mean I don’t look forward to offering him a steady diet of it, not unlike my own dad’s efforts to indoctrinate me into classic rock. I know, it sounds kind of ridiculous, but in between the slick choreography, matching outfits, and (failed) attempts to surpass the Backstreet Boys in every recognizable way, there were actual sweet lessons to be learned. However, I’m not sure any of us really understand the depth or the wisdom behind boyband music, since, as it turns out, there are a number of *NSYNC songs that definitely prepared us for motherhood.

I never thought the songs I played at full volume in the car would someday take on new meanings, or that I’d be singing those same lyrics to help my baby sleep. When I was a carefree ‘90s teen, I never anticipated the boyband pop I was obsessed with was instilling values that would someday help me parent.
